Finding the "Goldilocks" Fit: Why Size Matters as Much as Weight

When it comes to weighted blankets, most parents ask 'How heavy?'—but the missing secret to therapeutic success is also size. A blanket that is too large actually 'dilutes' the calming pressure by spreading it over the mattress instead of the child. Learn why concentrated weight is the key to Deep Pressure Stimulation (DPS) and how to choose the perfect fit from our multi-award-winning, bead-free collection.

Finding the "Goldilocks" Fit: Why Size Matters as Much as Weight

When searching for a weighted blanket, most parents start with one question: "How heavy should it be?"

While weight is a crucial part of the equation, there is a "secret ingredient" to therapeutic success that often gets overlooked: Size. At Woven Woven, our blankets sizes are tailored for little bodies. We don’t just create a lighter versions of adult blankets; we engineer sensory tools designed to deliver the perfect "mighty hug." Here is how to choose the right fit for your growing child.

The Size Secret: Concentrated vs. Diluted Pressure

Many people make the mistake of choosing a weighted blanket based on the size of the child's bed (e.g., a Single or King Single). This is the most common reason weighted blankets "don't work."

If a blanket is too large, the weight is spread out over the mattress rather than the child. This "dilutes" the pressure. To trigger Deep Pressure Stimulation (DPS)—the science that calms the nervous system—the weight needs to be concentrated directly on the body.

The Rule of Thumb: You want the weight to stay on the child, not the bed. A smaller, more intentional size ensures every gram of weight is working to provide that grounding, hugging effect.

The 10% Golden Rule

Safety and comfort go hand-in-hand. The industry standard, recommended by Occupational Therapists, is that a weighted blanket should be approximately 10% of your child's body weight. For children, we often suggest sizing down. For example if your child is 20kg we suggest getting a 1.5kg as weighted blanket during night-time is usually not used on its own. It is often layered with existing blankets.

  • 1.5kg Blanket: Ideal for children weighing around 15kg.

  • 2.2kg Blanket: Ideal for children weighing around 22kg.

  • 3.0kg Blanket: Our newest addition, perfect for growing kids between 30kg and 35kg.

Note: Always ensure your child is comfortable lifting the blanket off themselves at all times.

Why Bead-Free Distribution Wins

In traditional blankets, beads often bunch up in the corners, leaving some areas heavy and others empty. Because Woven Woven blankets are 100% bead-free, the weight is integrated directly into the weave. No clumping, no noise, just consistent calm.

Eliminating fillings, eliminates the risk of choking hazards from leaking fillers—one more reason parents and professionals rate us as best-in-class for safety.
